Independent Kotor Guide — DIY from the Cruise Port
Sea Gate to fortress trail — the complete DIY Kotor port day.
Kotor is one of the Mediterranean's best ports for independent exploration. The Old Town sits 400 metres from the gangway — no shuttle bus required. This guide gives you the walking route, timings, food stops and taxi prices to manage your own day confidently.
Walking route: leave terminal, follow harbour clockwise to Sea Gate (5–10 min). Enter walls, Arms Square, St Tryphon Cathedral, cat museum optional, fortress trail if fit. Return via same gate or River Gate loop. Allow 3–4 hours for Old Town and fortress; 2 hours for Old Town only.
Coffee: Arm's Square cafés charge premium for views — side lanes toward St Luke's Square are quieter and cheaper. Lunch: konoba in Dobrota side street (5 min outside Sea Gate) or Njeguški pršut plate in Old Town. Ice cream: multiple vendors on Arms Square.
Taxis: port to Sea Gate €3–6; port to Perast €25–35 each way — agree price or insist on meter. Return advice: be back at terminal 60–90 minutes before all-aboard; fortress descent and Perast traffic can add 30 minutes. Souvenirs: pršut, local wine, cat-themed gifts — compare prices outside Sea Gate stalls.
